*Song Description By Noles*
In July of 2012, I got invited to attend the Interfusion Music Summit in Cathedral City, California for October of that year. The invite came through ReverbNation after I released Plaid On Flannel's debut album Fairbairn Meadows. With a surge of motivation, I began writing new material I could perform at the 4 day symposium. I knew I had to step up my song game. The 1st album allowed me to finally unleash the material I had piled up over the previous number of years. The next album had to be next level material. Especially when I was going to be performing acoustically in front of music industry people in California.
I wrote the music for "Saw You Today" late at night on July 18, 2012. I had just watched the Lindsay Barr Band perform at Del Crary Park for Peterborough Musicfest. Lindsay and her band have a rootsy rock and roll sound reminiscent of other Canadian raspy-voiced songstresses like Alannah Myles and Sass Jordan. I was so inspired by the show, that I started songwriting as soon as I got home. The music for "Saw You Today", "Luck", and "Sore Thumb" were written that night on acoustic guitar though a tape recorder.
The lyrics for "Saw You Today" were written on July 23, 2012. Earlier that day, I was working at my brother's pizza joint in the Lansdowne Place food court in Peterborough. I could see a woman in the distance that looked familiar. I'd say she was about 50 metres away with the sunlight from the ceiling windows on her face. It was hard to see exactly who she was, and I was also busy working. I thought it might be my high school sweetheart who had moved to British Columbia in 2006. We really liked each other in high school, but I could never build up the courage to ask her out. She was an introvert like me. By the time she moved, we kept in touch. But it was still too late. I never did find out if it was actually her in the mall food court that day. When I got home from work, I wrote the lyrics for "Saw You Today". So it's an auto-biographical song about the girl I loved in high school.
Starting with "Saw You Today", I began recording the Mission Of Mercy album on September 4, 2012. During this time, I was also getting my songs ready to perform at IMS in the US. My trip to California was from October 3-7, 2012. I had an amazing time and met a bunch of awesome people I've stayed in touch with over the years. After I got back from the music trip, I finished recording "Saw You Today" on October 15, 2012. 19 songs later, the Mission Of Mercy album was released on May 20, 2013. "Saw You Today" is a tune I've performed many times as a solo acoustic act. In recent years, I've transposed the key of "Saw You Today" from Bm to Abm. Here's a version of me performing the song in the new key...
youtu.be/t-7Q8YurO1M I've never played "Saw You Today" with a band. But I know it's a tune that needs to be played with a band in the future.
