*Song Description By Noles*

The music for "Nick Nolte" was written on August 22, 2012. I came up with the guitar riff first. This clean and jangly guitar riff for "Nick Nolte" was inspired by the guitar work of Peter Buck from R.E.M. Especially his guitar work with R.E.M. in the 1980s. With a unique playing style, Buck had the ability to make 2 chords sound like a whole lot more. Using arpeggios that often sound chimey. The i-IV chord progression based off of the guitar riff in "Nick Nolte" is used throughout the verses and choruses of the song. In the tune's bridge, there are some additional chords that are not used in the verses or choruses. After I wrote the music for "Nick Nolte", I knew the song had folk rock and jangle pop written all over it.

I wrote the lyrics for "Nick Nolte" on August 25, 2012. The tune is about stubborn and jaded people. I used actor Nick Nolte as an example. Because he often plays a prick in the movies he's in. I don't know if he's like that in real life. But I use his name as an example of the character I'm illustrating in the song's lyrics. Nick Nolte's name is actually never mentioned in the tune. The person who caused me to write these lyrics was the drummer of High Waters Band. Which was the group I was performing weekly gigs with at the time. He had a short temper, and he was the bad apple in our band. Most of the time he was cool, but he didn't like us drinking or doing drugs at our shows. Being in a band was a part-time job to him. The lyrics for "Nick Nolte" were written specifically about a confrontation we had shortly before I wrote the song. I guess the only way I could let off steam was to write a tune about it. And "Nick Nolte" turned out to be a record worthy song.

Production for the Mission Of Mercy album began on September 4, 2013, and I started recording "Nick Nolte" on January 2, 2013. There are mostly clean guitars featured in the song. And that includes an acoustic guitar. But "Nick Nolte" also has piano accompaniment throughout the entire tune. The piano plays arpeggios halfway through each verse to elevate the melodies and atmosphere during those parts. Lead guitar fills can be heard over the course of the whole song. However, there is no official guitar solo section in "Nick Nolte". Which is rare in the Plaidalog. Some distorted rhythm guitars can be heard in "Nick Nolte", especially in the choruses of the tune. But the guitar balance in "Nick Nolte" favours the sound of clean guitars. A backup vocal harmony can be heard in the verses, choruses and bridge of "Nick Nolte".

I finished recording "Nick Nolte" on January 11, 2012, and the entire Mission Of Mercy album was released on May 20, 2013. I've never played "Nick Nolte" with a band or as a solo acoustic act. I guess it was just a song for the times when I recorded it. But it will live on as the 17th track from Plaid On Flannel's sophomore album Mission of Mercy.
