In the first half of 2016, I was writing a lot of songs that would end up on Independency. Something new that I was trying was writing songs with gaps between the chords. Instead of having a rhythm guitar strumming the chords all the way through, I wanted to leave spaces so the vocals and drum beat could fill those gaps. I did it on "Veteran Prospect" and "Smoker's Coat". This technique leaves a lot of space for enhancement features like vocal delays and percussion. Although I was somewhat inspired by hip-hop music to do this, the real rock influences were Wolfmother and Monster Truck. Those bands have songs that use that technique usually in the verses to use as a build-up. I hadn't done a lot of that on the first 3 Plaid On Flannel albums, so I figured it was time to try it out for the 4th album.

I wrote the music for "Movement" on May 1, 2016. Writing all verses and choruses using those gaps. And they were the biggest gaps from any of the songs that ended up on Independency. The only part of the song that doesn't have gaps is the brief bridge. I wrote the lyrics for "Movement" on May 23, 2016. It's one of those songs where even I don't know the meaning behind the lyrics. Haha! The song is written in the second person, and is almost like a rally cry for a movement. Encouraging standing up for our beliefs and finding the will and courage to do so. It's the first song I ever recorded that has an F-bomb in the lyrics. With the line "They haven't got a f*cking clue" in the 3rd verse.

I didn't start recording "Movement" until April 16, 2017 as I had already recorded 8 songs for the Independency album at that point. The song's two main rhythm guitars in the left and right channel of the stereo mix have a heavy flanger effect on them. Much like the guitar effect used in "Barracuda" by Heart. The two rhythm guitars in "Movement" are slightly off-rhythm from each other to give the overall sound more depth. This is called "The Haas Effect" which was discovered by Dr. Helmut Haas in 1949. There's an organ with some reverb playing along to give the rhythm more colour and atmosphere. "Movement" is the only song in the Plaidlog that has clapping in it. The claps are used during the parts without vocals, starting between the 1st and 2nd verses. The Haas Effect and reverb are also used on those multi-tracked claps.

Another technique I started using a lot of on Independency was having two vocals on the left and right channels of the stereo mix in choruses. While the verses and other parts have one vocal in the middle. This would vary from song to song, as I would sometimes use doubles on moments in verses and bridges. But "Movement" used double vocals on all choruses and the short bridge. That 4 bar bridge is where you can finally hear the organ shine. The keyboard effect I used is called Eighties Thin Organ and it's one of my favourite organ sounds in my DAW. It sounds like something The Stranglers or the B-52s would use.

Backup vocal harmonies can be heard in the 3rd verse, the bridge and the 4th verse. These harmonies fill a lot of space in the verses and give the second half of the song quite a bit of flavour. I completed the recording of "Movement" on May 21, 2017, almost a year after I finished writing the song. This track marked the halfway point for Independency. Both with the recording of the album and the eventual track listing order.
