*Song Description By Noles*

"Maybe" was written all in one day on April 29, 2013 as the last song recorded for Plaid On Flannel's sophomore album Mission Of Mercy. It was a song I wrote through my subconscious, where I didn't know it's meaning until a few days later when I learned my girlfriend had cheated on me. She slept with a guy who worked as a cook in the kitchen of a bar my group High Waters Band played at. I started recording the Mission Of Mercy version of "Maybe" on April 30, 2013 and finished the song on May 8, 2013. The entire Mission Of Mercy album was released on May 20, 2013.

After experiencing that heartbreak to end the album, I broke up with my girlfriend and moved to Toronto in September of 2013. Months later, the Plaid On Flannel band started on February 15, 2014, and "Maybe" was part of the first batch of my original songs that we played. The song's key was transposed down a minor-third from A to F# for my vocal range. Bassist Les Cassling called the song "anthemic". I called it a "tale of whoa". Woe spelled differently because the chorus consists of "whoa's". With the subject matter of the woe that I felt from breaking up with my girlfriend.

When keyboardist Jen Doyon joined Plaid On Flannel the next year on February 22, 2015, her presence completely transformed how "Maybe" sounded. With superb backup vocals in the bridges and choruses. And of course, her use of funky clavinet. We started recording the Rising Above EP on November 28, 2015, and "Maybe" was included on it. Minas Hatzigiannatzoglou's drum fills in the choruses of "Maybe" are incredible with so much feel to them. He also added cowbell to the guitar riff. Les Cassling used an effects pedal for his bass over the guitar riff and also performed quite well on the song. Especially in the post-choruses. This might be my favourite song that the other 3 Plaid On Flannel members performed on. They all really delivered on this track and improved the tune from the Mission Of Mercy version. "Maybe" is a song that will live on in POF's live repertoire for a long time.

lyrics

Words and music by Nolan Randall

Thought you might reciprocate your alternate affairs
Somebody else, somebody else
Looking for the answers in the desert of the sun
You've come so far, you've come so far

Doesn't matter if we're early or late
Feel the pressure when you carry the weight
Dig a hole in front of the garden gate
And you're trying to avoid the things
you haven't planned, where we began

Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
Ew-whoa-ew-whoa-ew-whoa-oh
Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
Ew-whoa-ew-whoa-ew-whoa-oh
Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
Ew-whoa-ew-whoa-ew-whoa-oh
Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
Ew-whoa-ew-whoa-ew-whoa-oh

Maybe it's something that you are
Maybe it's close to feeling far
Maybe we look like we are through
Maybe we thought more than we knew

Maybe you just need a place where nothing's typical
Where have you gone? Where have you gone?
Never thought you'd settle for less than what you bargained for
Don't be afraid, don't be afraid

Doesn't matter if we're early or late
Feel the pressure when you carry the weight
Dig a hole in front of the garden gate
And you're trying to avoid the things
you haven't planned, where we began

Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
Ew-whoa-ew-whoa-ew-whoa-oh
Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
Ew-whoa-ew-whoa-ew-whoa-oh
Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
Ew-whoa-ew-whoa-ew-whoa-oh
Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
Ew-whoa-ew-whoa-ew-whoa-oh

Maybe you're falling out of grace
Maybe your fears are out of place
Maybe the people are the same
Maybe they are what we became

Doesn't matter if we're early or late
Feel the pressure when you carry the weight
Dig a hole in front of the garden gate
And you're trying to avoid the things
you haven't planned, where we began

Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
Ew-whoa-ew-whoa-ew-whoa-oh
Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
Ew-whoa-ew-whoa-ew-whoa-oh
Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
Ew-whoa-ew-whoa-ew-whoa-oh
Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
Ew-whoa-ew-whoa-ew-whoa-oh

Maybe it's something that you are
Maybe it's close to feeling far
Maybe the people are the same
Maybe they are what we became

Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
Ew-whoa-ew-whoa-ew-whoa-oh
Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
Ew-whoa-ew-whoa-ew-whoa-oh
Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
Ew-whoa-ew-whoa-ew-whoa-oh
Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
Ew-whoa-ew-whoa-ew-whoa-oh
