On February 27, 2016, I went to the Danforth Music Hall in Toronto to see one of my favourite bands Wolfmother. I had been meaning to see them in concert for about a decade. They're one of my biggest influences, especially when it comes to modern bands. I was in late high school when their first album came out, and that was the style of music I really wanted to play. I wrote "The Rambler" when I first got into Wolfmother and it was based off the riff to "Joker & The Thief". There are other Plaid On Flannel songs that have been greatly influenced by Wolfmother and Andrew Stockdale. I don't know how I didn't see them perform live up to that point, but I knew it was time to finally see the Australian rockers in action.

I went to the show with then-POF drummer Minas. Opening act Deap Vally was awesome and afterwards, I noticed a lot of fans had been smoking weed. (I also brought a couple of joints.) Wolfmother performed songs from their fantastic new album "Victorious" and some gems from the first one. They started "White Unicorn", and that's when I lit up one of the joints . Stoner rock at it's finest with psychedelic lyrics. I had been waiting for that moment for years! Minas and I were smoking the joint and before I knew it, somebody aggressively grabbed my wrist from my joint-held hand. It was security, and the guy was not pleased. He told me of the signs about not smoking and we didn't notice them when walking in. After all, dozens of others were already smoking weed. Then the guy kicked me out. It was so upsetting because I didn't even get a warning. Minas was a team player and left with me. The security at DFH is so strict. You can't even smoke weed at concerts anymore. That of course ruined my night and I was pissed off that I got ejected only 5 songs in.

The next day, I talked to my ex-girlfriend on the phone. Because she was also a Wolfmother fan and we were planning to see them when we were together. After our phone call on February 28, 2016, I wrote "Into The Night" in it's entirety. I rarely finish music and lyrics all in one sitting. I'm usually methodical with my songwriting, but this one was done pretty quickly. I knew it would be the first song I would record for Independency. So after my Wofmother story, this song sounds nothing like Wolfmother. In fact, it sounds like another Australian band by the name of The Cat Empire. They have such a unique sound with hints of reggae, soul, and jazz fusion. I've been a fan of theirs since about 2010.

I had recorded a reggae song before called "When Will Everything Begin?" from Fairbairn Meadows. But I knew "Into The Night" was a far superior song. That phone call with my ex sparked the lyrics for the tune. (She's inspired other POF songs as well.) But the title was about me switching to the night shift at the brewery. (I'm not a morning person.) I worked nights at the brewery during most of the recording of Independency.

I started recording "Into The Night" on July 2, 2016 and finished it on October 10, 2016. I had been recording other Independency songs during that time too. I added the clavinets to make it more funky. People often say it sounds like the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Possibly one of the best songs from the Plaidalog and I'm proud of it!
