*Song Description By Noles*

The origin of "Full Moon Light" can be traced back to September of 2007. I remember this because I was in my 1st year of Radio-Broadcasting at Algonquin College in Ottawa. I came up with the main verse progression for "Full Moon Light" during this time. In the key of Bm, the guitar line I came up with was influenced by Neil Young. Having a folk rock kind of vibe to it. I held this idea for years, and knew I would eventually make it into a song.

On September 3, 2011, I began producing Plaid On Flannel's debut album Fairbairn Meadows. Following the production of 9 songs for the album, I started recording "Full Moon Light" on April 1, 2012. At that point, I hadn't even written the whole tune yet. As I came up with the main part years earlier. So I made it into a complete song during the beginning of the recording process. The main melody of "Full Moon Light" was influenced by both Fleetwood Mac's "Dreams" and Nirvana's "Heart Shaped Box". There is a similarity to both tunes' verse melodies. It's a melodic movement that works well in a minor key. All 4 Plaid On Flannel LPs from the 2010s have one song with a mandolin on each album. And "Full Moon Light" is the mandolin song for Fairbairn Meadows. The 3-part vocal harmonies in "Full Moon Light" were influenced by Ian Thomas' "Painted Ladies".

The lyrics for "Full Moon Light" were written on April 8, 2012. It's a song about the overachievers of the world who are products of good circumstances. More specifically, the lyrics address a Peterborough band at the time called Before The Curtain. I had just watched them perform at the Historic Red Dog Tavern, and there was a lot of hype surrounding the band. As they had been endorsed by Adam Gontier of Three Days Grace. 2 members from Before The Curtain are brothers, and their dad's a record producer named Barry Haggarty. I worked with Barry while recording the full-length album Stand Up with High Waters Band around this time. After seeing Before The Curtain live, I felt like they were over-hyped. Which is reflective in the line "Closing the curtain on these guys, now that I'm aware" from "Full Moon Light". To be honest, I was jealous of them for the privileged position they found themselves in. With their dad being a record producer, while my parents are so estranged from music. In "Full Moon Light", this is reflected in the line "Mom has got no records and dad he can't stand it".

I finished recording "Full Moon Light" on April 29, 2012, and the entire Fairbairn Meadows album was released on July 1, 2012. I've never played "Full Moon Light" with a band, but I have performed it live as a solo acoustic act. Playing the song multiple times at the Interfusion Music Summit in Cathedral City, California from October 4-7, 2012. Here's a video of me around that time performing "Full Moon Light" as a solo acoustic act... youtu.be/U04oNfN3Dv0 It's a tune I've since retired from performing. Mostly because the melody is out of my natural vocal range. If "Full Moon Light" was transposed down to a lower key, there's a possibility I might play it with a band someday.

lyrics

Words and music by Nolan Randall

Now, there’s something I need to release
And get off my chest
All the hype and people buying in
I’m not that impressed
There’s gotta be a reason why they’re placed
above the rest
Just because they’re popular
does not make them the best

Sure they’ve paid some dues and worked so hard
How else would they get there? whoa-oh-oh-oh
When it comes to skill and filling bars
There’s more to compare

Born into a world they have
Taken for granted, uh-huh
Mom has got no records
And dad, he can’t stand it, uh-huh
Full moon light, you never get lost at night
Full moon light, shows it’s alright

Getting used to a bush league kind of life
That’s what we have here
Everybody’s gone their separate ways
So few that are near
Is there anything out there that will make
my destiny clear?
Walk into a room so unafraid
My biggest fear

Is there any difference between them and I?
I think there might be, whoa, oh-oh-oh
Closing the curtain on these guys
Now that I’m aware

Born into a world they have
taken for granted, uh-huh
Mom has got no records
And dad, he can’t stand it, uh-huh
Full moon light, you never get lost at night
Full moon light, shows it’s alright

Born into a world they have
taken for granted, uh-huh
Mom has got no records
And dad, he can’t stand it, uh-huh
Na na na, you never get lost at night
Na na na, shows it’s alright
