about

*Song Description By Noles*

I first came up with the idea of "Feeling No Regrets" some time in February of 2014 just as the Plaid On Flannel band was starting up. I was in music school at Centennial College at the time. In my music production class, we had an assignment to create an original tune under 3 minutes. With my songwriting style, it is very difficult for me to make a proper song that's less than 3 minutes. I decided to try and write a tune with a very fast tempo. And that's when I wrote most of the music for "Feeling No Regrets". But it got to a point where I still couldn't make it work under 3 minutes. So I shelved that one and ended up creating an entirely different composition for the assignment.

While the Plaid On Flannel band started playing regular gigs as a 3-piece in 2014, I was writing new material for the next album Primitive Normative. I wrote the lyrics for "Feeling No Regrets" on July 13, 2014. Like many of my other song's lyrics, "Feeling No Regrets" is themed in spiritual optimism. With the exception of the line "Nobody's ever really gonna care", which was influenced by The Beatles' "Getting Better" from the line "It couldn't get much worse" from John Lennon. "Feeling No Regrets" is really about staying true to yourself and doing the right thing on life's journey. So that in retrospect, no regrets will be felt because you did everything you could with what you had. The last 2 lines of the 3rd verse are a tip of the cap to Canadian musician Randy Bachman. With references to "Looking Out For #1" by Bachman-Turner Overdrive and "Undun" by The Guess Who.

After "Feeling No Regrets" was completely written, I began recording the Primitive Normative version of the song on January 17, 2015 and finished it on February 14, 2015. While keyboardist Jen Doyon joined Plaid On Flannel on February 22, 2015, we didn't start playing "Feeling No Regrets" until about September of 2015. The song became a staple in our live set and we made sure to include it on our Rising Above EP which we began recording on November 28, 2015. Jen Doyon provided some playful piano during the verses to go along with her "do do do do" backup vocals. That was something she came up with on her own. Leading into the guitar solo, there is a delayed and reverberated effect used on her voice as if someone is falling down a canyon. "Feeling No Regrets" is a rockin' song in the Plaidalog, and I believe it will be in POF's live repertoire for years to come.

lyrics

Words and music by Nolan Randall

It’s time to realize our destiny
Can’t help but wonder what the next could be
We take a leap of faith to get somewhere
Nobody’s ever gonna really care
The universe has a mind of it’s own
We want to go and reap what we have sown
There’s more to what we haven’t figured out
It takes a lot to know what it’s about

I’ll do anything I want, and I’m feeling no regrets
Keeping an eye on the world by my side
And I’m feeling no regrets

Why can’t we all go and appreciate?
That way we won’t have to reiterate
What are we fighting for when nothing’s right?
We have to give everything all our might
Figuring out where you are going to
The only way you’re gonna make it through
We have to work the job until it’s done
But after that we’re gonna have some fun

I’ll do anything I want, and I’m feeling no regrets
Keeping an eye on the world by my side
And I’m feeling no regrets
I’ll do anything I want, and I’m feeling no regrets
Keeping an eye on the world by my side
And I’m feeling no regrets

Keeping an eye on the world by my side
And I’m feeling no regrets
Keeping an eye on the world by my side
And I’m feeling no regrets
Keeping an eye on the world by my side
And I’m feeling no regrets
Keeping an eye on the world by my side
And I’m feeling no regrets

Let’s fall into an unfamiliar place
Regardless of the fears we cannot face
Is there a point in even giving up?
There’s certain doors that we might wanna shut
Don’t even think about what people say
Some of them want to throw it all away
As long as you look out for number one
There is no way you’re gonna come undun

I’ll do anything I want, and I’m feeling no regrets
Keeping an eye on the world by my side
And I’m feeling no regrets
I’ll do anything I want, and I’m feeling no regrets
Keeping an eye on the world by my side
And I’m feeling no regrets
Keeping an eye, an eye for an eye
And I’m feeling no regrets
Keeping an eye on the world by my side
And I’m feeling no regrets
